Moving from the UK to Portugal is one of the most exciting decisions you’ll ever make. The sunshine, the slower pace of life, the extraordinary coastline, it’s easy to see why thousands of British families make this move every year.
But the physical reality of moving everything you own 1,500 miles across Europe? That part needs proper planning. And since Brexit, it’s more involved than many people expect.
This is our guide to the bit we know best: getting your belongings out of the UK, through customs, and safely into your new Portuguese home.
It Starts Earlier Than You Think
The biggest mistake people make with a UK–Portugal move is underestimating the lead time. Between decluttering properly, getting quotes, booking a collection date, and sorting the customs paperwork, you want at least three months, ideally more.
Start by getting a proper home survey from your removal company. Not a rough estimate based on the number of bedrooms, but an actual assessment of what you’re taking. That’s the only way to get an accurate quote and understand your options — full dedicated load, shared load, or a part-load if you’re moving lighter.
Declutter Before You Quote, Not After
Moving internationally is priced by volume. Every box, every piece of furniture, every item of clothing you haven’t worn in three years goes into a lorry that is costing you money.
Be honest with yourself before you start getting quotes. The furniture that looked right in a Cheshire semi will often look enormous in a Portuguese townhouse. The wardrobe full of winter coats can go. The exercise bike can definitely go.
The things worth taking are the things that genuinely matter, that will make your new house feel like your home from day one. Everything else is just weight.

Understand Your Customs Options
Since Brexit, moving your household goods from the UK to Portugal is a cross-border international shipment. Customs rules apply at both ends, and this is where people who’ve chosen the wrong removal company start to run into serious problems.
The most important thing to know: Transfer of Residence (ToR) Relief.
If you’re moving to Portugal permanently, you can import your household belongings without paying import duty or VAT, provided you apply correctly and at the right time. For a typical household move, this is worth thousands of pounds. And yet a surprising number of removal companies either don’t mention it, or don’t help you claim it properly.
Ask any removal company you’re considering: do you handle Transfer of Residence Relief as standard? If they hesitate or ask what that is, move on.
Your removal company should also prepare your customs inventory, a detailed list of everything being shipped. It needs to be accurate, and you should keep purchase receipts for anything high-value: jewellery, electronics, antiques.
Choosing the Right Removal Company
This decision matters more than most people realise, and it’s worth taking the time to get it right.
The UK–Portugal route is long and specialised. It involves post-Brexit export documentation, Portuguese import clearance, and delivery to properties that are sometimes down narrow cobbled streets, up hillsides, or along tracks that a large lorry has no business navigating without local knowledge. A company that does this route regularly is a completely different proposition from a generalist doing it for the first time.
Questions worth asking before you book:
- How many UK–Portugal moves do you carry out each month?
- Do you handle customs clearance, or do we arrange that separately?
- Will you assist with our Transfer of Residence Relief application?
- Who handles the Portuguese end of the delivery, your own team, or a subcontractor?
- Are you a member of the British Association of Removers (BAR)?
Red flags to watch for:
- A quote dramatically lower than everyone else’s
- No mention of customs at any point in the conversation
- Vague answers about who handles delivery in Portugal
- Pressure to pay a large deposit before you’ve signed anything
A company physically based in Portugal, with its own depot, its own staff, and genuine local knowledge, handles your belongings from the Portuguese end rather than handing off to someone unknown. When your lorry arrives in the Algarve, the people meeting it know the roads, know the properties, and are there if anything needs sorting. That matters.
What to Expect on Moving Day
Even when everything goes well, moving day is a long one.
Your team arrives in the morning. If you’ve taken a packing service, they bring materials and work through your home methodically. If you’ve packed yourself, they’ll start loading. Either way, the house empties faster than you expect, and there’s a particular feeling when the last box goes on the lorry. Relief, excitement, a touch of grief. All entirely normal.
A couple of practical things that make a real difference:
Label every box before the team arrives. Label them in English and Portuguese if you can, cozinha for kitchen, quarto for bedroom, sala de estar for living room. The team unloading at the other end will thank you, and so will you at 7pm on your first night when you’re looking for the kettle.
Keep your important documents with you personally, passports, visa paperwork, property documents, insurance. Not in the lorry.
On the Portuguese end, your new home goes from empty to full of your things remarkably quickly. It’s chaotic and wonderful in equal measure, and it’s usually the moment the move feels truly real.
What If Your New Home Isn’t Ready?
Timing doesn’t always line up perfectly. Your UK sale might complete before your Portuguese purchase does. Your rental might start two weeks after your collection date. You might want to arrive in Portugal and spend a few months finding the right permanent home before you fully commit.
Storage in Portugal is the answer — and it’s worth thinking about before you need it rather than scrambling when you do.
The best arrangement is a removal company that can deliver your belongings directly from the lorry into their own secure storage at the Portuguese end, then transfer everything to your new home when you’re ready. No double-handling, no mystery about where your things are, no relying on a separate storage company you’ve never dealt with before.
Look for flexible month-to-month contracts. Timelines in Portugal have a habit of shifting, and the last thing you want is to be locked into a fixed-term storage agreement when your completion date moves.
